Great Expectations

Great Expectations, written by Charles Dickens and first published in 1861, is a classic novel that follows the life of the orphan Pip as he strives to become a gentleman. The novel begins with Pip, a young orphan being raised by his sister and her husband Joe Gargery, a blacksmith. Pip is visited by an escaped convict who threatens to kill him if he does not bring him food and a file the next day. Although the two have an often strained relationship, Pip continues to pine for Estella throughout the novel. Though Pip’s expectations of becoming a gentleman are great, his journey is fraught with many hardships. He faces personal difficulties and struggles to be accepted by the upper class society he now finds himself in. As his expectations are dashed, he is forced to re-evaluate his life and come to terms with his place in the world.
